Lunch

We are not planning a formal Lunch or Dinner and plan to see everyone at the picnic on Sunday.

After lunch

The following suggestions are available. Due to one of the options would take the participation until sunset (apprx 8:30) we will not be having an organized event in the evening (Unless determined by the group to do so)

The Eastern Cemetery (1668) and Portland Observatory;

We would start with a tour of Eastern Cemetery. This is the oldest major cemetery in the City of Portland. Established in 1668, with the earliest recorded burial in 1718, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tours of the Eastern Cemetery can be provided by Spirits Alive, www.spiritsalive.org

A short uphill walk will take us to the Portland Observatory – (Older folk would need to ride up the hill)

Since 1807, the Portland Observatory has offered spectacular views of Portland’s busy harbor and served as a beloved symbol of the city’s rich maritime heritage. Named a National Historic Landmark in 2006, the Portland Observatory is the only known remaining historic maritime signal tower in the United States.

The Tate House

http://www.tatehouse.org/

Tate House was built in 1755 for Captain George Tate (1700-1794) and his family, which had recently arrived in the Colonies from Britain.

Tate served as the Senior Mast Agent for the British Royal Navy, overseeing the cutting and shipping of white pines from Maine to England. This position assured Tate's success and his status in the community is reflected by the style of architecture he selected for his home.
